With an overall area of only 5,544 square miles, Connecticut may be a small state in size, but has a rich history. Admitted to the Union on January 9, 1788, Connecticut boasts many historical firsts.   1. A law still on the books states that in Hartford, you may not, under any circumstances, cross the street walking on your hands!
  2. The first phone book in the United States was published in New Haven in February 1878 and contained only 50 names.
  3. Connecticut never ratified the 18th Amendment (Prohibition).
  4. The first woman to receive a U.S. patent was Mary Kies of South Killingly, who invented a method of weaving straw with silk in 1809.
  5. Connecticut has the oldest continuously published newspaper, The Hartford Courant, established in 1764.
  6. In 1901, Connecticut passed the first automobile law, which set the speed limit at 12 miles per hour.
  7. The official Connecticut State insect is the Praying Mantis.
  8. Connecticut is home to the helicopter (1939), first hamburger (1895), Polaroid camera (1934), and color television (1948).
  9. The first women-only golf tournament in Connecticut was held in Waterbury on June 12, 1917.
  10. The word “Connecticut” comes from an Indian word “Quinnehtukqut” which means “beside the long tidal river.”
  11. The first English settlers of Connecticut arrived in 1636, settling the plantations of Hartford, Wethersfield, and Windsor.
