Some Fun Real Estate Facts About Farmington, CT

Farmington’s wooded environs, centuries of history, and central location offer residents ‘the good life.’ Thickly foliated cul de sacs and large corporate complexes harmoniously coexist. The city is home to the corporate headquarters of Carrier and Otis Elevator. Just the right home might include the products of both! Here are a few fun real estate facts about Farmington:

Arthur Power, a Quaker from Farmington, NY, bought land and settled here in 1823. First, it was called Quakertown. Later, and less than imaginatively, it too was named Farmington!

Farmington is the site of a famous college preparatory school that has kept its straightforward name in spite of its rather exclusive pedigree. Miss Porters School was founded by the school’s namesake, Sarah Porter, in 1843. Among its many notable alumni are Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy and Lily Pulitzer.

So just who is Curtis James Jackson III? He’s ‘Fifty Cent’, an entertainer that, in 2004, bought Mike Tyson’s 18 acre compound a couple miles form the city center.

One might say that she plays on more than just ‘Ladies Day.’ — Farmington’s Suzy Whaley became the first female golfer to ever qualify for an event on the men’s PGA tour. She qualified to play in the Greater Hartford Open by winning the 2002 Section PGA Tournament. Controversy ensued, because she played from the shorter ‘Ladies Tees.’

This resulted in the Professional Golfers Association informally adopting a policy that required future competitors to all use the same tees. Subsquently, this PGA policy became known as the ‘Whaley Rule.’

Maybe it is a womens’ world — Hey guys, you’re outnumbered. Farmington’s adult women are more numerous than their male counterparts. There are about 9 men for every 10 women. The odds are a little more even in Hartford.

The existence of numerous corporate and medical facilities in the area offers very short commutes to many of Farmington’s residents.
