Snowbirds: Is it time to Downsize?

downsize homes

Are you a snowbird? Thinking of being a snowbird? A move to warmer weather each winter sounds lovely, especially that the cold weather in New England can be taxing. Of course, during the months you’re gone you’ll miss your friends, family and neighborhood, which is what keeps bringing you back here each spring. But what about your house in Connecticut?  Are you starting to think it’s a lot to take care of? Downsizing might be a consideration.

  • Save money. Downsizing to a smaller winter home could mean savings in many areas. Property taxes and sewer taxes could all be lowered giving you extra money to spend on those southern beaches and golf courses.
  • Summer maintenance. A smaller home means less time cleaning and fewer repairs to manage. A smaller yard still gives room for gardening and entertaining but allows you to spend more time with family and friends when you return home.
  • Winter maintenance. Even though you should be relaxing in the nice southern weather, you still have concerns about your northern house. You might be concerned about the older roof and the heavy snow. Maybe you pay to have your driveway plowed and sidewalks shoveled while you’re away. By having a smaller, even newer home, these concerns will lessen.

What type of home will suit your future needs? Downsizing could mean moving to a single story, smaller house.  It could also mean moving to a condominium or renting an apartment. As a professional realtor with a team of specialists,  we can help you sell your home or find a home that fit all your needs.
