At the south end of Main Street is the historical James Soda Fountain. In 1877 it was a pharmacy. In 1896 a soda fountain was added. In 1917, Miss James ran the pharmacy and was the first African American pharmacists in the state.

Keep traveling south and you’ll reach Fort Saybrook Monument Park, site of New England’s first fortification. This is located where the CT river meets Long Island Sound.

Just a stone’s throw from the park is the Dock and Dine. Although part of the restaurant is under construction due to Hurricane Sandy, the restaurant is open for the summer. Diners can enjoy gazing out over the Connecticut River while eating fresh seafood. It’s well worth a visit.

What’s a trip to Old Saybrook without a drive along South Coast Causeway? You can drive, walk or ride your bike along this road and enjoy spectacular views of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound.

So head on down to Old Saybrook and enjoy a day of relaxation.
