Home Selling Tips for Families with Young Children: Where Do I Hide the Toys?

Kids toys

If you’ve got your home on the market and have young children at home, the task of having your house ready to show at a moment’s notice is a constant chore.  Realtors and staging experts also emphasize the fact that there should not be toys throughout the home if you want to sell quickly.  If you’re trying to live in your home while selling it, this can be a difficult task.  A few home selling tips can help you take care of those toys and keep them more manageable while your house is listed.

  1. Sort through toys and get rid of half of them.  Toss ones that are broken or missing pieces, and donate others that your children have outgrown or don’t use.  You won’t want to pack these anyway so you might as well do it now to cut down on clutter.
  2. From whatever is left, cut that amount in half and put those toys in storage, especially any large toys.  You could box them up and put them in the attic or garage, but if you rent a storage unit you can declutter the rest of the house as well, making it appear larger.  This should still leave the children plenty of toys to play with, and they will be excited to rediscover the toys that were in storage after the move.
  3. Keep all toys in the children’s bedrooms.  Realistic?  No, probably not, but have children put them all back in the room once a day, and keep a basket handy for doing a quick sweep of the house to pick up those that have escaped before a last-minute showing.
  4. Try to keep most toys in the bedrooms stored out of sight.  Invest in some under-the-bed storage containers and a foot locker to store some of the toys.  Less clutter means the room will appear larger.

Selling a house with young children is a challenge.  Children are going to get toys out and play while the house is on the market, but you can cut down on chaos and clutter by sorting through them and developing a plan for storage.
