DIY Tips: New Englanders Shouldn’t Neglect Sliding Glass Doors During Storms

Hurricanes are not just a problem in Florida. As history has taught us, they can hit New England too. The same may be said for tropical storms and thunderstorms that boast high-powered winds. When they roll through the Constitution State, it is important for property owners and renters to think about their homes’ sliding glass doors.

Although strong, sliding glass doors are no match for flying debris and hurricane force winds. As such, they often break or leak. On a positive note, manufacturers have improved their sliding glass door offerings over the years. Consequently, many offerings come with impact-resistant glazing systems, specialized frames and custom glass. Nonetheless, we would like to remind everyone to take a series of do it yourself precautions before each storm hits.  We’ve itemized them below:

  • Replace Worn Out, Sliding Glass Doors with New Ones
  • Cover Sliding Glass Doors with Wind Debris Panels
  • Replace Old Weather-Stripping and Gaskets

Taking such preventive steps should help keep sliding glass doors intact throughout the worst of the storm. Unfortunately, Mother Nature may choose to disagree and leave homes in disarray. So if the doors sustain damage anyway, DIY folks may be able to ask local fabricators to help replace the glass.

As long as the roads are clear, many fabricators will visit storm damaged homes and assess glass sliding door damage. They also welcome those property owners who would prefer to bring their broken doors into the shop and do the repairs themselves. Once the amount of damage that has been done to the glass sliding doors has been assessed, they can make recommendations accordingly. In some instances, it may be safer to replace the entire glass sliding door whereas other situations may only call for minor repairs.
