Hartford County, Connecticut

About Hartford County

Hartford County is a county located in the north central part of the US state of Connecticut. The 2010 Census records show that the county population is 894,014, making it the second most populous county in Connecticut.[1]

In Connecticut there is no county-level executive or legislative government; the counties determine probate, civil and criminal court boundaries, but little else. Each city or town is responsible for local services such as schools, snow removal, sewers, fire department and police departments. In Connecticut, cities and towns may agree to jointly provide services or even establish a regional school system.

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 750.57 square miles (1,944.0 km2), of which 735.44 square miles (1,904.8 km2) (or 97.98%) is land and 15.13 square miles (39.2 km2) (or 2.02%) is water.[4] The county is divided into two unequal parts by the Connecticut River, and watered by Farmington, Mill, Podunk, Scantic, and other rivers. The surface is very diverse: part of the river valleys are alluvial and subject to inundation, while other portions of the county are hilly and even mountainous.
